What is JWS about?

It is a class which rewards good riding position and reactions , arena craft and the horse rider combination in both SJ and simulated XC phases, within an arena.

Penalty marks are gained as follows:

Jumping penalties, time penalties, style penalties and are added together to give a final score. The winner is the horse/rider with the lowest number of penalties.

How do I gain style marks ?

The Rider- Position
A balanced & supple position in the saddle, sympathetic to the horse’s movement.
A secure lower leg and hands following the horse’s mouth.
The correct application of the aids.

The Rider- Arena Craft and Reactions
Ability to use the arena effectively.
Ability to demonstrate the correct and appropriate lines of approach to fences.
The ability to ride instinctively, to think and to react to situations that may occur.

Horse & Rider – Combination
The overall harmony of the horse and rider as a partnership.

What type of fences are used?
Show jumps for the SJ phase and usually J4Joy arrowheads, brush fences, open corners or wooden rustics for XC.

What is the difference between NSEA Eventer’s Challenge and Jumping with Style?
EC is usually in a bigger arena with fixed XC portables, ditches, banks and possibly water and gives more of a XC feel. Courses are often longer. There is no style mark. JWS has more technical lines in the XC phase.

Jumping with Style has been the training ground for a number of riders who have gone on to medal at pony and junior European Championships including Finn and Ellie Healy, Ibble Watson, Mollie Faulkner, Emily Llewellyn, Tom Tulloch, Chelsea Pearce, Sam Ecroyd.
